How Echoryte treats M4A
The .m4a extension is normally used for audio carried in the ISO Base Media File Format family. Because a container can hold different codecs and metadata, the extension is useful for preflight but is not enough for final validation.
A practical voice-memo workflow
Phone voice memos are often close to the microphone and can transcribe well. Still review participant names, place names, acronyms, and speech that overlaps with notifications, wind, or room noise.
Before you upload
- Export the original voice memo rather than playing it through a speaker and recording it again.
- Open the file locally first and confirm that the full recording and intended audio channel are present.
Limits worth knowing
- Protected or encrypted media cannot be decoded as an ordinary uploaded recording.
- The M4A label does not reveal the codec, channel layout, or whether the source has already been heavily compressed.
