Program streams multiplex several elements
A program stream multiplexes coded media for relatively reliable storage. The ingest probe recognizes its MPEG container token and separately checks audio, because a valid moving-picture stream can still be silent.
Check timing across the whole program
Old transfers can remain aligned at the beginning but drift later. Compare words with the source at several time points, especially after apparent edits, recording gaps, or recovered sectors.
Before you upload
- Scan the full duration and seek near the end to confirm that the program index is usable.
- Retain disc, reel, or broadcast identifiers when the transcript belongs to an archive.
Limits worth knowing
- Older program streams can contain timestamp discontinuities, damaged packs, or audio/video drift.
- The .mpeg label does not identify one exact audio or video codec profile.

Can an old MPEG file be remuxed before transcription?
A remux can rebuild container structure without intentionally recompressing the elementary streams, but it can still change timestamp and indexing behavior. Keep the original, record the command, and compare duration and sync before using the derivative.
